Hi
I saw my obst last week and he decided that I should be on heparin....(functional Protein S =50% low).
He has given me 'Clexane' (LMWH)
The midwife showed me to inject in my leg!!! The leaflet and everything else I've read/heard says to inject in the tummy!!!
I am seeing a differnt midwife on friday and will ask her to show me how to do it in my stomach
Anyone else had jabs anywhere other than the tummy?
love, Josie

Assuming that Clexane, like Lovenox, is to be injected subcutaneously, I think it could theoretically work anywhere you could inject into skin/fat rather than muscle. From what I read on the Lovenox website, injecting in muscle can cause bleeding within the muscle, which doesn't sound pleasant.
I inject in the tummy, and I was worried about it at first. I was afraid that I would bruise and run out of places to inject. So far that hasn't happened--I alternate sides and move gradually out from about 2 inches from the belly button to as far over to the side as I can go and still get a good pinch of skin, then go back near the belly button again. I kind of wonder what will happen once my belly gets bigger--will it get harder or easier to do??
Where in the leg did the nurse show you to inject? Somehow (maybe just because I'm used to the tummy) the leg sounds much more painful. With the tummy, there are days that I hardly feel it and days when it really stings. I haven't yet figured out what makes the difference!

Hi Josie,
I am also on Clexane, and i inject it into my tummy. In the past, a nurse injected it into my leg, and also my upper shoulder. Out of the three areas I must admit that I do prefer the tummy. I found the thigh area to be quite painful.
I am quite small, and found the injections to sting quite a bit. Now that I am 8 months pregnant, and have obviously gained weight, they are not a problem at all.... on the " Sting factor basis."
Kld, I have found no difference in the injections getting easier, or harder to give as I have gotten bigger. For me, it's basically been just the same.

Hi Kid and Yogi
Thanks so much for your injection advice. Been on Clexane for over two weeks now - My husband has been injecting in my tummy (less likely to bruise I have found than in the thigh).
I don't like the jabs but if they somehow enable me not to have a stillbirth this time I'm very grateful (Though cause of death was not found)
Thx Josie. Mum to Plum Ann (born asleep at 40wks) & Tiny Baby - due Oct 03.

Good day everyone.
I'm about one week away from starting Lovenox. I was wondering if any of you heard about the pre-filled injector pen, I think is what it is called. It's a spring loaded syringe. I'm going to ask my high risk OB about it. My problem with the lovenox is inserting the needle after I get past that it's not too bad.
I'm hoping that this time with Lovenox doesn't take as long as the last. My last pregnancy I started before I got pregnant and that took 5 months. Then I countinued until 38 weeks when I was induced, then took it for another 6 weeks after.
I had 4 losses before my little boy was born in June of 2002. For oll of them the doctors said they didn't think it was because of the PSD. But this doctor I'm seeing now thinks it was. I'm on coumidan for life and my mom has it too.
Take care everyone...........

Hello everyone one........been on the lovenox shots for so long I am unable to remember when I started. The places I use is very back of my upper arm in the soft spot........both sides. The area is quite big to be able to inject on. You will be able to feel or see the last injection shot. Well I can........hope this helps.
The thought of my tummy.........no fat because of being so petite........just bothers me. There are more spots, these are just the ones I can handle.
I would love to explain how I do it.......if done right....slow, no medicine on the end of needle.....sometimes ( alot more then not) you won't even feel it.
They do come springe loaded.......depends of the company itself. Ask to see if you (from drug store that is) could get those. They are safer.
Any ?'s just ask..........I would love to help!!!!!!
Loads of Luck..............bamas01woman

Hi All,
When I had clexane after my PE (thankfully only in hopsital - not had to do my own yet) they did arm, leg and tummy depending on what nurse did it, it was the stinging that I couldn't stand - it was like having a constant itch that you really had to scratch - now I'm pregnant again and got to have clexane 2 weeks pre and 6 weeks post natal - I'm going to get my midwife to give my hubby lessons - I don't think I could do it myself - although I have been told no tummy whilst pregnant - perhaps thats just my hospital's practice though! lol to all you pin cushions out there - i'm getting ready to join you.

klb............
I totally agree with you on the hospital injection sites......except while pregnant of course.

They sting me too in my tummy.......whew, I can't stand it.
Ask the doctor about other places, if you can't inject while pregnant(of course)
maybe you can try other places too. It does sting if not given with a steady hand, to me, anywhere.
I don't give myself injects............I find someone else to do it. I hate needles or more less the thought of them.
I was told anywhere in the flabby......we call it soft-fatty areas.
But do check with a doctor..........I see on here where everyone takes things...i.e. meds, shots, and state of mind different.

The better place is - stomach.
And it isn't so hard.
Good luck!

The nurse who showed me how to inject said anywhere there is fatty tissue but I have only done it in my stomache. I hate doing it but I dont want to die or lose my baby so I have to. I am taking 40mg of lovenox but they want to move me up to 80 mg the brand i use is called Aventis they have a website at www.Aventis.com and i get that prescription filled at walgreens I guess that is the brand they carry and I was wondering are the other brands different when it comes to the size of the needle. These are prefilled and 27 gauge by 1/2 inch I was wondering if anyone knew of a brand that used the 30 gauge needles I heard they were much smaller.

I inject Lovonox in my tummy as well. I asked the Doctor where was the best place and he said the stomach #1 hten legs or arms. You can even inject on your upper buttocks. mY doctor perfered the stomach I don't know why.

After my PE, 3 weeks after the birth of my son, I was too sensitive about the tummy area to allow them to inject my stomach! The nurses therefore injected into my upper arm and it hurt, and major bruising developed. Later, when I was given it to inject myself at home, we went to be taught how to do it and they suggested, again, the tummy. I refused, and they said OK, try the upper thigh as that's a higher fat area. One needle into my leg and I was jumping around in pain as it felt like fire had travelled down my leg. The nurse was very unsympathetic and told me not to be so silly.
When I got home I discussed it with a friend of mine who is a family doctor and he said there are more nerves in the leg that you could potentially hit, and if you do hit one it's *very* painful, and that's clearly what happened to me.
After that I overcame my fear of the stomach and had the shots there - and it's so much easier, you can barely feel them, less chance of hitting something you don't want to hit with the needle, and less bruising.

I just started on Fragmin injections last night - 5000 i/u daily, 1 shot. The haematologist said to inject into the stomach which I've been previously comfortable with anyways. When I took the prescription to the pharmacy she recommended injecting just below the rib cage and in 1 inch spaces, moving across to the other side, down an inch, then back, gradually, then the original spot should be bruise free. However, having tried that last night I found it hurts and stings to inject that much higher up than I have previously - usually I do it around hip level. I am giving up on that plan!

I found that the tummy was the best place to inject, I tried my thighs and upper arms but found that they stung a bit too much for my liking ! The tummy area didn't hurt as much, and I found the bruising was minimal.

Hey claire
Don't know the fine details but overall seems to just be a different type of Heparin which does the same job. I believe it lasts a bit longer in the system so you only need 1 shot per day rather than two.
Read the thread entitled 'Injecting Issues' for some hints on avoiding burning pain every time you stick yourself !
